'Semantics' is anchored by Honest Lee's hard drums and puts keys from Baltimorian Troy Long front and center for a jazz funk workout. Troy and Lee met on the pandemic project of DJ Fleg's East Coast Affair live show, hit it off, and Troy's leads and solos are the star of this track.
The bed of 'Semantics' features upright bass, harkening to early-90s hip hop when the instrument was used prominently, but jumps into Lonnie Liston Smith territory when the CP88 riff is introduced and drums and tambourine bounce off staccato electric guitar stabs. The sum of all these interlocking parts creates a new sound in instrumental soul, with one ear in the past and one in the future.
Keep your eyes open, for this is just the beginning of unveiling Honest Lee's upcoming sophomore solo album entitled 'Cosmic Justice'.
