about

'The Return of Davyd Beach' captures a musician’s upbeat grappling with the crossroads of time and love and myth. Caught in the fray of the contemporary world canted with looming disasters, unrest, and unrequited love, he explores in groove and beauty his psyche and produces a pop aesthetic that fuses paradox with the sublime. A lo-fi electronic surrealness permeates this artist’s first full album, a blend of acoustic, electric, and digital instrumentation behind the auto-tuned voice.

Much of the album is grinning through charmingly goofy love songs pining for innocence as much as the unnamed lover. The poppier tunes have an oxymoronic contrast of sugary and catchy melodies against often bleak lyrics turning a corner into a dystopian eschaton. Spaced throughout the album are riff-based instrumentals that showcase a rewarding musicianship and taste with a crunchy and driving sensibility.

The lyrics never feel overly confessional, and the longed-for other is a shadow in our impression, a wisp of our own impulse to connect at a transcendental level with what is good and right in this world of confused beings.

While Beach relies on timeless troubadour harmonies, there is a psychedelic exploration to the sound, part new wave, part shoegaze, part bedroom sessions vibe.

On the track 'It’s a Wave,' Beach captures a timeless sense of early rock’s upbeat enthusiasm and angst with a heavy nod to surf. With a lighthearted harmony reminiscent of late ‘50s radio play, he balances a melancholy melody against lyrics of end times, “I live in an old ghost town / One foot in the grave / Vultures overhead.” He accomplishes making our final curtain sound so ironically sweet and lighthearted.

Then on the track 'Cool Blue,' the artist offers an homage to the surrealist and low-fi futurism classic by Michel Gondry, The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Beach’s music brings us back to the naval-gazing heartache and longing of the film’s star-crossed lovers, singing, “There’s nothing out there / You can leave it all behind / It’s not fair / The way it is sometimes.” The pining melody and distorted guitar work in tandem for the plaintive chorus, bringing us right back to the forlorn looks of Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet.

Throughout the album, Beach offers us protests against the loop-based pop, subverting our expectation of plastic, synthetic chart hits with a wry and absurd sense of humor, in which the sonic reality seems to disintegrate into new directions and genres, unexpected journeys in an age of pat consumerism.

The album is marked by a longing, a searching for home, an earnest surrealist looking forward, while catching a digital sine wave through nostalgia and melancholy. This digitized hazy crunch comes across like a postmodern collapse of the times, with a well-seasoned and blissful desire for our deepest romanticized impulses--to be authentically ourselves.

The world has seemed to turn its back on this soundscape hero, in misted and missed opportunities of the ephemeral sort, yet he is steadfast in responding with art and love.
